By actively fostering an environment of inclusion, appreciation, and accessibility, we can get closer to a wine world where everyone feels welcome. Looking for some wine-inspired actions you can take to support the LGBTQIA+ community this Pride and beyond? We’ve got some wine-adjacent actions you can take below:
For wine drinkers:
1. Support queer-owned wineries
We recommend RAM Cellars – for every bottle sold, $5 is donated to nonprofits that directly improve the lives of LGBTQIA+ folks!
Other favorites:
-
- XOBC Cellars (Seattle)
- Remy Wines (Willamette)
- Majuscule Wines (Napa Valley)
- Enso Urban Winery (Willamette)
- Birdhorse Wines (California)
2. Follow LGBTQIA+ wine professionals
Double tapping on social media can go a long way. Here are a few of our favorite winefluencers to follow along with:
- @sparklingwinos (we’ve already bought our copy of ‘Life is The Bubbles’)
- @sommeligay
- @queerwino
3. Use intentional language
Specifically when in wine spaces, keep your language in mind. Using phrases like ‘partner’ or ‘significant other’ can be a great subtle way to make remove assumptions from our daily conversations. If you misspeak or stumble over pronouns, don’t be afraid to correct yourself. The queer community appreciates you trying more than anything else!
4. Listen
Oftentimes, the most supportive thing you can do is open your ears and truly hear the people around you.
For those who work in wine:
5. Add your pronouns to your email signature, employee profile, Instagram bio, LinkedIn bio, etc.
Designating your pronouns (no matter your orientation) helps create a more comfortable, supported environment for queer folks.
6. Invest in education and mentorship
Education is everything. Invest in employee inclusivity training (or encourage management to do so.)
It’s also important to hire and promote intentionally. Remember mentorship is an important part of fostering an inclusive company culture.
7. Prioritize representation in your marketing materials
When planning photoshoots or selecting stock images, keep in mind there’s not a one-size-fits-all family or relationship.
8. Look for health insurance policies that cover medical issues specific to the LGBTQIA+ community
If you work in wine HR, keep queer needs in mind when shopping for insurance policies.
9. Move toward gender neutral bathrooms in tasting rooms and other wine spaces
Aim to create a more inclusive tasting space with designated neutral bathrooms.
