How to Properly Hold a Wine Glass
Here’s how to hold your wine glass to take your wine-drinking to the next level.
Grab Life By The Stem
Always hold your wine glass by the stem. Why? Many wines taste best when served chilled. But when you put your hands on the glass, the wine will get warm much faster. If the wine you’re sipping on isn’t chilled, your body heat won’t affect it, but your hands will leave smudges and make it difficult to see the color and clarity of the wine.
Gatsby, you’re embarrassing yourself!
The exception to the “only by the stem” rule is when your wine is served too cold. In this instance, wrapping your fingers around the glass will warm the wine allowing the aromas and flavors to intensify.
Wanting to use those custom-designed stemless glasses for which you paid $200 and the soul of your first-born child? No problem. Just hold it closer to the bottom and make sure to set your glass down in between sips to avoid warming it up.
When one of my best friends, Kate Middleton, heard that I was writing this post, she sent me a picture to help you guys get a visual of how to properly hold a glass of wine. She’s the best.
“Simply pinch the stem between your index finger and your thumb and you’ll be drinking wine like a royal!” says Kate Middleton, to me, in my fantasy world.
